Job Description
Intelligenciia is excited to partner with Coeur Mining to identify and secure their next Senior Geotechnical Engineer, supporting the continued success of the New Afton Mine. This is a fantastic opportunity for a block cave specialist to join a premier underground operation, based in the vibrant and sunny community of Kamloops, British Columbia. The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will report to the Technical Services Superintendent and play a critical role in supporting underground cave operations at the New Afton Mine, one of Coeur Mining’s key North American assets.
This role is central to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a complex underground block cave mine. The successful candidate will lead geotechnical risk management activities, support mine planning through data-driven insights, and provide hands-on leadership in underground rehabilitation and ground support programs.
Working closely with operations, geology, and planning teams, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for translating technical analysis into practical, field-ready solutions. This is a highly visible, operational role suited to an individual who thrives in a fast-paced mining environment and is motivated by solving real-world challenges underground.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead for underground geohazard risk management, including hazard registers, TARPs, and verification of field controls.
- Lead and prioritize underground rehabilitation programs, including tunnel rehabilitation, ground support improvements, and management of a high-volume backlog.
- Establish and implement prioritization frameworks to effectively manage competing geotechnical demands and support operational execution.
- Interpret cave monitoring and instrumentation data to assess block cave performance and geohazard risks, including air blast, seismicity, and mud rush.
- Review and sign off on mine designs and plans, identifying geotechnical and geological risks and defining appropriate controls.
- Support and ensure compliance with key risk management systems, including the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), seismic risk management plans, and ML/ARD requirements.
- Provide oversight of geological and geotechnical data integration into mine planning, including QA/QC validation and guidance on ore reconciliation, fragmentation, and draw control.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, geology, and planning teams, while mentoring and developing junior engineers, geologists, and EITs to improve team capability and structure.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Mining, or Geological Engineering
- P.Eng or P. GEO (EGBC), or be immediately eligible for registration
- 10+ years of underground mining experience, with a strong focus on geotechnical engineering
- Experience in underground mining including sub-level open stoping or block caving
- Strong understanding of geohazard risks including ground control, seismicity, air blast, and water/mud rush.
- Experience with mine planning and 3D modelling tools (e.g., Deswik, Leapfrog or any relatable softwares)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally in an operational environment
