Job Description
We are retained by our client, a leading Canadian producer of metallurgical coal. They are seeking a Director of Water Management, reporting to the VP of Technical Services. This role will lead enterprise-wide water management strategy across mining operations in Northeastern British Columbia.
This position is responsible for integrating water management strategies into mine planning, permitting, operations, and closure activities across a growing portfolio of mining assets. The successful candidate will oversee surface water and groundwater management, water treatment strategy, aquatic effects oversight, and regulatory support activities while ensuring alignment with operational and environmental objectives.
You will work closely with operations, engineering, environmental, permitting, and executive teams to support safe, compliant, and practical water management solutions across multiple sites.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring both strategic oversight and direct technical involvement within a fast-paced operational mining environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead enterprise-wide water management strategy across mining operations.
- Oversee surface water and groundwater management programs, including water balance modelling, dewatering, diversion, discharge, storage, and treatment strategies.
- Support permitting, environmental assessment, and regulatory compliance activities through technical guidance and risk-based input.
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of water management specialists.
- Partner with operations, engineering, environmental, and permitting teams to integrate water management strategies into site activities.
- Support engagement with regulators, Indigenous communities, and external stakeholders on water-related matters.
- Provide technical oversight and review of key water management studies, models, and operational strategies.
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive water management experience within the mining industry.
- Provide technical expertise in surface water and groundwater management within operational mining environments.
- Experience supporting permitting, environmental assessments, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Deep familiarity with British Columbia mining and environmental regulatory frameworks.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to balance technical, operational, and environmental priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working within BC’s mining and regulatory environment is considered highly desirable.
- Experience within metallurgical coal operations or complex multi-site mining environments is considered a strong asset
- Post-secondary education in Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
